Description

False Cardamom / Dwarf Cardamom / Cardamom Leaf.

Alpinia nutans.

This hardy herb has large green foliage that offers a lovely spicy aroma. A member of the Ginger family, the plant isn’t a true cardamom (it is often referred to as False Cardamom).

The leaves can be dried and used in pot pourri. The leaves and flowers can also be used in tea to add a flavour similar to chai. The flowers are edible too.

In cooking, the leaves can be used in the same way you would use cloves or bay leaves; ideal for soups, Asian-style curries and stir-fries.

The plant is believed to assist with hypertension and is said to have anti-fungal, anti-ulcer and diuretic properties.

This versatile, highly aromatic plant is ideal for growing indoors. If growing outdoors, the plant enjoys a part shade position and can handle most soil types. It should grow to about 1m high by 1m wide.
