Native to south east Africa, this aromatic perennial was traditionally used to treat insomnia, indigestion, asthma, convulsions, bronchitis and general pains.
The fleshy leaves can be chewed to help relieve sore throats.
A tea can be made from the leaves which is believed to assist in inducing sleep.
The leaves can also be finely chopped and used as stuffings for meat dishes.
The plant is easy to grow and prefers a part shade position. Minimal watering is required.
