Description
Salvia officinalis ‘Icterina’. 1.1L coir pot.
Native to southern Europe, this golden foliaged sage produces lovely purple flowers in summer.
Sage can be added at any stage of the cooking process with the flavours of the leaves partnering well with other strong flavoured herbs such as coriander, garlic, oregano, parsley, rosemary and thyme (among others). The younger leaves are a lot milder in flavour and can be used in jellies, teas and other drinks.
Sage is a great herb for stuffings and is often used to enhance strong or game flavoured meats and with full flavoured vegetables such as leek, onion, potato and pumpkin.
Sage can be used medicinally and it may help a sore throat if gargled with some mint.
The plant enjoys a full sun position in dry, well draining soil. It should grow to about 50cm high by 50cm wide and is ideal for pots.
