Native to western South America, this fast growing annual offers pale blue-mauve flowers with white centres, and papery Chinese lantern-like seed casings.
Medicinally, the plant has been used as a cough medicine, diuretic and sedative, among other things, across numerous cultures.
The seeds are used in traditional Tibetan medicine.
The leaves have been used as an insecticide to treat head lice.
In the southern United States, the juice of the leaves is mixed with milk as a poisoned bait to kill houseflies.
The plant should grow to around 1m in height and can handle various soil types.
