Native to the Mediterranean region, this perennial is regarded for its floral stigmas, which are used to make the spice saffron.
One of the most valuable spices, over 200,000 flowers are needed to make one kilogram of the spice.
Flowers appear in autumn and the threads can be harvested when the flowers fully open.
The plant enjoys a full sun position in well draining soil, and should grow around 10cm high.
The bulbs will multiple each year, providing you with more plants.
