Description

Akebia quinata. 1.1L coir pot.

Native to East Asia, this vine offers purple-pink flowers that smell a little like chocolate (some say nutmeg or vanilla).

Fruits are purple, sausage-shaped pods that split open to reveal white flesh and black seeds.

The flesh can be eaten raw or processed into jams and preserves.

Extracts are being explored as a potential treatment for diabetes, kidney disease and obesity.

In traditional Chinese medicine, dried stems (Mu Tong) are used to treat urinary tract infections.

The vine enjoys a full sun to part shade position in well draining soil, and should grow around 4m high by 4m wide.
