Description
Scutellaria baicalensis. 3.7L coir pot.
Native to the Lake Baikal region of Siberia, and also found in Korea, Mongolia and China, the roots of this perennial plant have been used in Chinese medicine for over 2000 years to help treat anxiety, inflammation, respiratory infections, among many other things.
The roots are generally harvested after around three years of age.
The leaves can be eaten and used in salads.
Growing to around 30cm in height and spreading to 60cm, the plant offers blue, tubular flowers.
Baikal Skullcap enjoys a full sun to part shade position in lighter, free draining soils. It is believed the active chemicals in the roots are greater if grown in less fertile, sandy soils. It may benefit from some sun protection in the hot Perth summers.
