Description
Arbutus unedo. 19cm coir pot.
Native to the Mediterranean Basin and Western Europe, this evergreen tree offers white flowers, followed by edible orange – red fruit.
The fruit is often used in jam, yoghurt and alcoholic beverages, such as the Portuguese medronho.
The leaves were used in traditional medicine for their antiseptic, astringent and intoxicant properties, among others.
Often used in a decoction, the leaves have a high concentration of flavonol antioxidants.
Attractive bark.
The plant prefers a full sun to part shade position in well draining soil, and should grow around 5m high by 4m wide.
Drought tolerant once established.
Great for screening.
