This is one of the species used to prepare Kanna, which was / is used by a number of South African tribes as a hypnotic, sedative and stimulant. It was / is valued by the tribes, assisting them in walking long distances without food or water.
The succulent can be crushed, fermented and dried and either chewed, smoked or a tincture, decoction or tea can be made.
The plant enjoys a full sun to part shade position in free draining soil and should grow around 15cm high by 25cm wide.
It actively grows during the colder months and can become dormant during our hot Perth summers if the heat gets too much for it.
You can plant the coir pot directly into the ground, which will eliminate root disturbance and help keep your plant happy. The roots will make their way through the pot and into the soil. The pot itself will decompose within two months. Alternatively, you can use it as a decorative pot plant as the coir pot will last between 12-18 months (then you can plant it in the ground).
