Description
Acorus calamus var. americanus. 3.7L coir pot.
Native to Canada and northern United States, this perennial wetland plant has leaves that give off a sweet spicy aroma when crushed. The leaves can be used to flavour beer, and were used as scented matting in homes during medieval times.
The partially grown flower stems can be eaten. The roots and rhizomes have traditionally been used by Native Americans as a medicinal remedy for anxiety, colds, fatigue, heartburn and nausea.
The plant enjoys a full sun to part shade position in moist soil, and should grow about 60cm high. Its ability to tolerate periods in water, make it a good choice for planting around ponds.
