Description
Galium odoratum.
Native to much of Europe and surrounding areas, this strongly scented creeping perennial has been used for medicine and food since the middle ages.
Traditionally, the plant was used to help with wound healing, stomach complaints, varicose veins, circulatory problems, among other things.
The scent of the leaves increases on drying, making it popular for use in potpourri and as a moth deterrent.
The plant is also used to flavour Maitrank (a German drink), brandy, beer, tea, ice cream, jelly, jam and soft drinks.
It enjoys a part shade position in moist, rich soil and should grow around 10cm high by 50cm wide.
