Description
Ilex paraguariensis. 3.7L coir pot.
Native to the sub-tropical areas of Paraguay, Brazil, South-East Argentina and Bolivia, this rainforest plant is an interesting addition to the garden.
The Guarani Indians of Paraguay are believed to have brewed an ‘energy drink’ from the plant as early as the 16th century. The caffeine in mate is less than coffee but more than tea. A fairly traditional method of making the drink is to infuse about 3-5 grams of leaves in a cup of hot water.
The leaves are high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Many believe the medicinal benefits of the plant include fat burning properties, increased energy, memory enhancement and appetite suppressant properties (among others).
The plant grows very large in the wild but in gardens, it is more likely to grow to 4-6m in height. It enjoys a part shade position in fertile soil, with a good layer of composted mulch and a good supply of water.
