Description
Salvia hispanica (Salvia rhyacophila).
This bushy annual / biennial is a popular super herb.
The bright green leaves are edible, the blue flower spikes are beautiful and the small oval seeds have a sweet nutty flavour.
The young leaves can be picked and added to salads or used in tea.
The seeds are rich in anti-oxidants, fibre, omega 3 fatty acids and protein.
Cut back after flowering and prior to seed drop.
The plant can handle a wide range of climates but enjoys a full sun position in very well drained soil. It doesn’t like frost or being over-watered.
It should grow to around 80cm high and 60cm wide.
You can plant the coir pot directly into the ground, which will eliminate root disturbance and help keep your plant happy. The roots will make their way through the pot and into the soil. The pot itself will decompose within two months. Alternatively, you can use it as a decorative pot plant as the coir pot will last between 12-18 months (then you can plant it in the ground).
