Description
Tussilago farfara. 3.7L coir pot.
This perennial ground cover offers bright, fragrant yellow flowers, which appear before the leaves. This unusual trait has resulted in it being called ‘cart before the horse’ and ‘son before the father’.
The flowers and buds have a nice aniseed flavour and can be used in salads. The leaves have a rather bitter flavour.
The plant grows to around 20 – 30cm in height and enjoys moist, fertile soils.
It is a spreading plant that prefers a full sun position (although it will handle part shade).
Coltsfoot has been used for hundreds of years to help treat bronchial congestion and coughs. It is often taken as a tea. Topically, it has been used to treat inflammation of sores and cuts.
