Native to Europe, this deciduous shrub / small tree has a history associated with magic and witchcraft and it was traditionally used for its medicinal values.
It is believed to help treat viral and bacterial infections, coughs and colds, tonsillitis and nerve disorders (among other things).
The creamy-white scented flowers can be used to make tea, cordial and champagne.
The plant usually requires cold weather in order to set fruit.
The roots, leaves and bark shouldn’t be consumed internally but they are useful in making home made pesticides and fungicides.
Elderflower enjoys a full sun to part shade position in well draining soil.
It should grow to about 3m high by 3m wide.
