Description
Rubia tinctorum. 3.7L coir pot.
A popular plant in medieval gardens, this climbing, evergreen perennial has traditionally been used to create a vivid red dye used to colour fabric and timber.
The red colour is derived from the roots, which are generally suitable after two years of growth. However the richness of the colour increases with the age of the roots.
Native to southern Europe, the plant enjoys a full sun to part shade position in free draining soil and should grow around 1.5m in height. The plant spreads via underground runners, so if you’re worried about it roaming, you can grow it in containers.
