Also known as Mother of Herbs, and native to southeast Africa, this aromatic, hardy perennial was traditionally used to treat insomnia, indigestion, asthma, convulsions, bronchitis and general pains.
The fleshy leaves can be chewed to help relieve sore throats.
A tea can be made from the leaves which is believed to assist in inducing sleep.
The leaves can be used in cooking, offering a unique, oregano-like mint flavour.
The plant is easy to grow, and prefers a part shade position in free draining soil.
