Native to the Mediterranean region, this perennial plant has fibrous roots that proceed from the base of a large bulb.
The bulb can be cut into slices, dried and powdered.
It has many medicinal uses, and has diuretic and expectorant properties.
The plant enjoys a part shade position in well draining soil, and should grow around 45cm high, with the flower spikes reaching around 1.2m.
