Diospyros nigra.
Also known as Black Sapote or Black Persimmon.
This tropical fruit tree is native to Central America, Mexico and Colombia. It is a species of persimmon and not related to the White Sapote.
A broad canopy tree, it should grow to around 7m in height in the garden.
The plant likes light, fertile soil and regular watering when young.
Plant in a full sun position for best fruit production. The fruit, which resembles a chocolate pudding, can be eaten by spooning out the flesh.
